我在中国生活了30年，中国就是我的第二故乡，我是半个中国人。
I have been living in China for over 30 years. China is my second hometown, and I am half Chinese now.


今天我们要讲述的故事主人公——杰西，他来自于非洲加蓬共和国，至今在中国生活了30年，会讲法语、英语、普通话、粤语，热爱中国武术和中国美食，还娶了一名中国太太，他觉得中国就是自己的第二故乡，自己就是半个中国人。
JC, the main character of our story, is from the Gabbinese Republic in Africa. He has been living in China for over 30 years, and can speak French, English, Putonghua and Cantonese. He is fond of Chinese martial arts and Chinese cuisine, and is even married to a Chinese woman. To him, China is his second hometown, and he even regards himself as half Chinese.

执医广州17年的加蓬医生

1990年，16岁的杰西应哥哥“到中国来看看”的建议，怀着医生梦选择来到中国读大学。杰西先到北京的高校学习汉语语言课程，仅用了一年的时间，他就通过了汉语水平测试。次年，他首次踏足这座位于中国南方的城市广州，在中山医科大学（现中山大学中山医学院）开始了他的临床医学的求学之路，从本科一直读到了医学博士。
In 1990, 16-year-old JC took his elder brother’s advice and chose to continue his higher education in China. He first enrolled on a Chinese-learning course in Beijing, and in less than a year, he passed the Chinese language proficiency test successfully. He then visited Guangzhou for the first time, becoming a student of clinical medicine at Zhongshan Medical University (now the Zhongshan School of Medicine, SYSU), from an undergraduate student to a doctoral candidate.

2003年毕业后，杰西入职广东祈福医院成为一名普通外科医生。当被问及接诊中国病人时是否遇到困难时，杰西表示，虽然自己有着黝黑的皮肤，但他与其他中国医生其实并无不同。
Upon his graduation in 2003, JC was employed by Guangdong Clifford Hospital as a general surgeon. When being asked about his difficulties in treating Chinese patients, JC said that, in spite of his dark skin, he was as competent as other professional Chinese doctors.

转眼间，在祈福医院，杰西已工作了17年。“很多中国患者在推开诊室的门，最初看到洋面孔时会有些惊讶，但当我张嘴说话，他们就打消了顾虑”。杰西与中国患者交流沟通很顺畅，也彼此信任。据了解，祈福医院目前仅有杰西一名外籍医生，许多外籍人员到医院看病都指明找杰西医生。
Without realizing, JC has been working in Guangdong Clifford Hospital for over 17 years, “Many Chinese patients were surprised in seeing a foreign face when entering the consulting room; but when I started talking, their doubt and suspicion were dispelled immediately.” JC communicated well with Chinese patients, and Chinese patients all trusted in him. JC is the only foreign doctor at the hospital, and many non-Chinese patients all expressed explicitly that they wanted to be treated by Doctor JC.

“自认为自己是半个中国人”

杰西说，他和妻子都是旅游达人，在中国30多年的时光里，杰西的足迹踏遍了中国90%的地方，体验了不同城市的风土人情，但他说，最喜欢的还是广州。这里有他的同学、朋友、同事、家人和最让他钟意的粤菜，逢年过节，杰西都会陪太太回岳父岳母家过节，中国的文化习俗、生活方式与思维方式已深深入影响了他，杰西觉得中国就是自己的第二故乡，自己就是半个中国人。
Both JC and his wife love travelling. In the past 30 years, they have travelled to at least 90% of Chinese territory and experienced the customs and local culture of different cities. However, JC confesses that he loves Guangzhou the best. In the great city of Guangzhou, he has his classmates, friends, colleagues, family members and his favorite Cantonese food. On any festive occasion, JC would visit his parents-in-law with his wife; and he has been profoundly influenced by Chinese culture, Chinese lifestyle and Chinese way of thinking. That is why JC keeps saying that China is his second hometown and he is now half Chinese.

除了粤菜，杰西还说着一口流利的普通话和粤语，但杰西笑言，对自己的中文“功力”并不满意，他的目标是对标央视主持人的发音。每当被朋友夸赞“中国通”时，杰西总是很谦虚地回答：“中国上下五千年的文化，太深厚了。我还要继续去学习。”
Apart from his love of Cantonese food, JC speaks fluently of Putonghua and Cantonese; however JC is not satisfied with his Chinese speaking skills, and he wants to be as good as those CCTV presenters. Whenever being praised as a Chinese expert, JC would humbly reply that, “China has a profound cultural heritage that lasts over 5000 years, and there is too much for me to learn.”

“面对疫情，中国的做法了不起”

疫情发生以来，杰西一直在广州，他目睹了中国政府应对新冠肺炎疫情，勇于担当，对内倾尽全力守护国民，对外力所能及地支援他国。杰西说，在中国生活很有安全感，这让他更深刻地理解了中国，“政府把每一个人的生命健康都看得很重，社区每一个居民守望相助，同心守护家园，这样的力量很强大。”
JC was in Guangzhou when the epidemic first broke out. He witnessed how Chinese government responded to the epidemic in a responsible manner——to safeguard the health and safety of Chinese citizens internally and to offer the much needed assistances to foreign countries externally. JC said he felt safe in staying in China, and he even understood China much better, “Chinese government values highly of the well-being of each individual, and very resident within a neighborhood community is willing to help others and protect their homeland. It is a powerful force.”

早在2003年SARS期间，杰西目睹了中国人民抗击非典的伟大历程，对于这次新冠肺炎疫情，他说道“中国已经很有经验了，我很幸运在这样的时刻待在这么安全的地方。”杰西很崇拜像钟南山这样的中国医生。“作为城市社区中的一员，社区为我提供了安全的环境，我也要用自己的能力去回馈社区。”在疫情期间，杰西前往番禺区祈福英语实验学校做疫情防控知识宣讲，成为一名校园健康指导员，杰西用一口流利的中文，为学生讲解防疫知识。
Back in the SARS outbreak in 2003, JC witnessed how Chinese people were fighting bravely against the widespread epidemic. When the COVID-19 pandemic happened, JC said, “China is experienced in handling these crises, and I feel lucky to stay in such a safe place.” JC doesn’t hide his admiration for Dr. Zhong Nanshan and other amazing Chinese doctors. “My community has provided me with a safe environment, and me as a community member, I should do my part to contribute to the community.” During the pandemic, JC chose to teach epidemic prevention and control knowledge at Clifford English Experimental School in Panyu District as an external health instructor. JC speaks Chinese fluently and his teaching is very helpful to local students.


身在中国，情系家乡。杰西响应中国防疫号召以医生的身份做一些力所能及的事情，与此同时，他的心也时刻挂牵着家乡的疫情，他给很多老乡打电话，询问家乡的情况。杰西表示，中国的疫情防控经验为家乡提供了很好的参考，“面对这么多人口，中国政府能够充分动员每一个人、每一个家庭，都齐心参与到这场疫情防控战中去，中国的做法很了不起。”
JC stays in China, but he also misses his family and loved ones in the Gabbinese Republic. He has tried his best to respond to the call of Chinese government in fighting against the pandemic; at the same time, the pandemic updates in his home country is his grave concern. He made many phone calls to his friends, asking about the latest pandemic information. He believed that Chinese pandemic prevention and control experience was very useful for the Gabbinese Republic, “China is a country with a large population, Chinese government has done a great job in mobilizing every individual and every family in this fight. China’s practice is of great significance to the world.”
